FAQ 2.17

Why does God guide some people and not others?
How can this be fair?
Question:

A number of Quranic verses tell us that God guides whom He wills. Can you please explain how can this be fair and what chance do some people have when they cannot be guided unless it is the will of God?

Reply:

Many people have indeed inquired as to why does God guide only whom he wills to guide and how can this be fair for those whom God does not choose to guide!

The Quran gives us the explanations of all things (16:89). This important question is fully explained in the following words:

[42:13]
He has legislated for you of the religion what He has instructed for Noah and what We inspired to you and what we instructed for Abraham, Moses and Jesus: "You shall establish the religion do not be divided therein. The Mushrikeen will greatly resent that which you invite them to. God redeems to Himself whomever He wills and He guides towards Himself those who are devoted.

The underlined words confirm that God does not guide some people by random, but that God guides all who are devoted to Him.

God also guides those who strive in His cause. Their devotion to serve God earns them the guidance from God:

[29:69] As for
those who strive in Our cause, We will guide them to Our paths. God is with the good-doers.
The implication of this matter is that all prayers that we offer in which we implore God to guide those whom we love are utterly useless.
God will not guide the ones whom we love just because we implored him to do so, but God will guide them if they are devoted to Him, so they have to earn it themselves and qualify for God’s guidance. All we can do is hope that one day they will accept the truth of the Quran and devote all their religion to God alone:
[6:162] Say, "My Salat, my worship practices, my life and my death, are all devoted to God, the Lord of the worlds.
[6:163] He has no partner. This is what I was commanded with, and I am the first to submit."
