Conquest of Mecca
Question:
Was the prophet wrong to conquer Mecca and make everyone convert to Islam? Is there any unbiased, trustworthy historians that tell the correct truth? Because everybody seems to think Muhammad forced people to enter Islam 'by the sword'.
Reply:
The Prophet had to re-take Mecca in order to cleanse the House of God (Kaaba) from the idolatry that was practiced there.
However, when he re-took Mecca, he did not force anyone to convert to Islam.
If there are any sources that claim that Muhammad forced people (by the sword) to accept Islam, they are lies against him.The evidence we have is given in the Quran.
Muhammad could not have done so simply because God commanded him very clearly in the Quran that there shall be no compulsion in religion and that he (Muhammad) does not have the authority to force anyone to believe:
- "There is no compulsion in religion: the right way is now distinct from the wrong way. Anyone who denounces the devil and believes in God has grasped the strongest bond; one that never breaks. God is Hearer, Omniscient" 2:256
- "Had your Lord willed, all the people on earth would have believed. Do you want to force the people to become believers?"10:99
- "Proclaim: "This is the truth from your Lord," then whoever wills let him believe, and whoever wills let him disbelieve"18:29
- "You shall remind, for your mission is to deliver this reminder. You have no power over them" 88:21-22
- "You have your religion and I have mine" 109:6
These are the Quranic words, so it is up to us to accept them and exonerate Muhammad from what was claimed against him, or stick with what un-Quranic sources claim. As for the second part of your question:
<<<
Let us get to the heart of the matter:
Do you believe that the Quran is the word of God?
